Contract Sewist Opening:
We are seeking a contract sewer to help manage our seasonal workload.
We are looking to form a long-term relationship with an independent contractor (1099) who would be working from their own workspace, who can remove and install new zippers with a very high level of precision and quality (close to factory level finishing) —primarily on puffy and fleece jackets. This work is somewhat seasonal, with higher volume in the winter months and typically a slowdown in late spring and summer.
- Compensation is per piece, typically $25–$35 per jacket.
• For a highly skilled sewist, most jackets take 45–60 minutes. In order to achieve that they would need to be able to work efficiently, in a production-like manner and batch similar tasks. - While we cannot guarantee a set weekly volume, winter demand generally ranges from 8 to 15+ pieces per week. This role is best suited for someone seeking part-time, supplemental work.
• This person must have their own straight-stitch, drop-feed machine (Juki 8700 or similar), using sizes 10- 14 needles and Tex 30 thread. A plus if they also have a serger.
• Their workspace must be clean and free of pet hair and odors.
• We can provide one to two days of initial process orientation, along with photo and written documentation for reference. After orientation, we will provide a batch of test jackets (not customer garments) and the potential contractor will have 1–2 weeks to complete them on their own time. This period will allow the contractor to dial in the process and show us that they have the skills needed to do this work at the quality level we need. We will then review the work together. If the results meet our standards, we will move forward with a contract and begin providing weekly batches. The orientation and test period is unpaid.
We may be able to expand beyond jacket zippers into backpack and bag zippers if someone has a needle feed or walking foot machine for additional work in the future.
We are looking for someone dependable, honest, highly detail-oriented, and interested creating in a long-term working relationship.
